I visited a Maori student today that has been struggling in their current school. The teacher believes the student to be 'just coping' commenting that they seem to know routines well despite the hearing loss. A very limited conversation with the student revealed what appeared to be extreme shyness.
I conducted a TOLD-i language assessment and analysed the data to discover that they are 4+ years behind age expectations. The student has an extremely limited vocabulary, something that requires some immediate intervention.
An IEP has now been set up for this student and the school and family are onboard. Given that the hearing loss is a normal-slight loss, the team needs to be extremely proactive and look into all possible factors that could be contributing as well as set up support and intervention.
The family have not had the best experiences with public heath and schools so were not keen to actively advocate for action, but when they realised everyone was coming together for their child, they were pleased to be part of the process.
